Celebrate the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King

Johnson House MLK Day 2025Join Johnson House Historic Site to honor MLK Day by celebrating Dr. Constance Clayton, a trailblazing education advocate, and Fasaha Traylor, author of They Carried Us with spiritual performances by Voices of Philadelphia.

Dr. Constance E. Clayton is a trailblazer, education advocate, humanitarian and mentor. She was the first African American and woman to lead the School District of Philadelphia She loved children! A fierce advocate for students in her care, she held the students, teachers and colleagues in the Philadelphia school district to a standard of excellence.

 

Fasaha Traylor, author of They Carried Us, book of research and documentation of the many Black women who changed the course of history in Philadelphia, including Dr. Constance Clayton. Reading from her book, Traylor will engage the audience in a shared discussion about the legacy of Dr. Clayton and how she impacted the educational experiences of Philadelphia’s children and families. Ms. Traylor was the founder and director of an independent school in Germantown, served on the board of a national human rights group, principal of Lift Every Voice, LLC, and awarded several fellowships: National Science Foundation, the Art Peters Memorial (journalism) and the Temple University Urban Fellowship.
