Start your morning with peace and fresh air! Join wellness coordinator Megan Do Nascimento for a moderately paced stroll through Awbury’s 56-acre landscape—exploring gardens, woodlands, meadows, ponds, and the farm. It’s the perfect way to reset, connect with nature, and begin the day energized.

Kids 6-15 years old will learn the importance of the UGRR and the struggle for liberation from enslavement. Through lessons, readings, discussion, films, music, arts, crafts, and theatre students will learn about history, culture, and values.

Permanent Exhibition: Deeply Rooted, Ever Changing: 300 Years in Germantown

A permanent exhibition on display at the Historic Germantown Visitor Center, Deeply Rooted, Ever Changing: 300 Years in Germantown, traces more than three centuries of transformation, highlighting the evolution of Germantown from its founding through the abolitionist movement, the Industrial Revolution, and the Civil Rights Movement. Artifacts on display include decorative arts, advertisements, posters, household items, a rare 1730s rooster-shaped weather vane from the German Reformed Church in Market Square, and a surveyor’s compass designed by American astrologer and mathematician, David Rittenhouse. Drawing from the Germantown Historical Society’s collections, the exhibition provides a window into the everyday lives, achievements, and challenges of the communities that called Germantown home.

Rotating Exhibition: Rebellion and Remembrance in Freedom’s Backyard |July 9 – December 1 2026

Serving as the Visitor Center’s first rotating exhibition, Rebellion and Remembrance in Freedom’s Backyard examines Germantown’s unique role in the American Revolution and how the events of that era helped shape the neighborhood’s identity for generations. Just six miles from Independence Hall, Germantown stood at the crossroads of revolutionary change. Home to descendants of German and British colonists, enslaved and free Africans, and Native peoples, the neighborhood witnessed the violence of war firsthand while also serving as a place where individuals sought and asserted their freedom. Featuring Revolutionary-era artifacts and documents, the exhibition explores how memories of battle, resistance, and liberation helped establish Germantown’s lasting reputation as “Freedom’s Backyard.” Among the exhibition’s highlights is a section of the historic Johnson House fence damaged during the Battle of Germantown, accompanied by a video simulation illustrating how the damage occurred during the conflict. Also debuting on July 9, the exhibition will remain on view through December 1, 2027.

In honor of the Semiquincentennial and The Clay Studio’s Radical Americana, please join us at Stenton for a day that combines consideration and examination of archeology and art through Teagan Schweitzer's archeological research and Dennis Ritter's installation Another Place Within.

10:30 AM - What Was for Dinner at Stenton? Archaeology and Foodways by Teagan Schweitzer, Ph.D.

What can a collection of animal bones tell us about life at Stenton? Archaeological excavations uncovered evidence of the foods eaten by the Logan family and their guests, from poultry and game birds to livestock raised on the plantation. Schweitzer will explore how archaeology helps reconstruct the meals, entertaining practices, and daily life of one of colonial Pennsylvania's most influential households.

11:20 AM - Places Within: Reflections on Historical Research and the Influence of Personal Experience on Art Making by Dennis Ritter

Ritter will share the development and creation of the sculptures featured in Another Place Within. Presented through the artist’s personal experiences growing up in our region, this presentation will consider how objects in the Stenton collection, the dichotomies present in Stenton’s histories, and the inherent contradictions in the American Experiment influenced this body of work.

Bios:

Teagan Schweitzer, Ph.D., is a historical archaeologist whose research explores the relationship between food, culture, and daily life in early Philadelphia. She earned her doctorate in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and conducted the faunal analysis of materials recovered from Stenton as part of her dissertation research on Philadelphia foodways. Her work combines archaeological evidence with historical documents to reconstruct the foods, meals, and culinary traditions of the past.

Dennis Ritter is an artist and educator whose studio work explores the role of objects as foundational markers for personal identity and cultural histories. Working with clay as his primary material, his work manifests as large-scale still life sculptures, digital photographs, site-specific installations, and community art. Within this work he explores themes of labor, social justice, and identity. A native of SouthEastern Pennsylvania and a child of the bicentennial, Ritter currently resides in Rome, GA where he teaches Ceramics and Sculpture at Berry College.
