Charles Jones Wister (1782-1865), grandson of German immigrant John Wister, was an active citizen scientist in Philadelphia and member of the American Philosophical Society. He helped to establish the “Twilight Club”, which eventually became the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences and was, at that time, “a few citizens interested in the study of the works and laws of the Creator”. With the suggestion and help of his friend Isaiah Lukens, Charles built an Observatory at Grumblethorpe to study the stars in 1834, equipped with a transit instrument and astronomical clock made by Lukens. The Wister observatory allowed them to closely observe and record celestial phenomena, including the transit of Mercury in 1845.
