“Denying the Wrecking Ball: Maxwell Mansion and the Power of Inspiration” by Mark Frazier Lloyd, Sunday, April 7, 2024 via Zoom.
In 1964, a group of committed Germantown neighbors came together to save the quirky house at the corner of Tulpehocken and Greene streets. Their work would launch the movement to preserve Victorian sites and neighborhoods, raise new awareness about the nineteenth-century city, and open the lives of Americans in that era to new historical study and interpretation.
Join us as we celebrate this anniversary, with a lecture presented my one of Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion’s longstanding supporters.
Mark Lloyd grew up in the house at 6135 Greene Street. He became active at the Maxwell Mansion in 1975; was elected to the Board in 1978; and President of the Board in 1979. It was the Maxwell Mansion that set him on his career path. He was Director of the Germantown Historical Society for four years and then Director of the University Archives and Records Center at the University of Pennsylvania for thirty-five years. He remained interested in the Maxwell Mansion and in 2016, he was elected President of the Board a second time. He retired from Penn in 2019; was honored with title University Archivist Emeritus; and has continued to be a friend and supporter of the Maxwell Mansion.
