Event Details
Join PHS’s Trees Program Manager, Mindy Maslin, as she explores the importance of urban tree canopy, as well as how to plant, care for, and advocate for urban street trees. The PHS Tree Tenders program trains individuals and neighbors in all aspects of tree care and maintenance, and twice a year, provides street trees for communities to plant in their neighborhoods.
PHS Tree Tenders plants over 3,000 trees across the Philadelphia region annually. The program both educates and rallies community participants to support one another in providing long-term care for the trees, leading to a high tree survival rate for these community-led plantings.
Mindy will discuss the history of the Tree Tenders program and the benefits of training residents on how to maintain their urban trees, as well as give insight into strategies and tools for planting trees to ensure longevity and health.

Mindy Maslin

Mindy Maslin, an accomplished environmental activist and community organizer, is the founder and Manager of The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) nationally recognized PHS Tree Tenders program. Founded over 30 years ago, Mindy recognized that taking care of Philadelphia’s trees was an opportunity to not only increase valuable tree canopy in an urban environment but also to develop a neighborhood-based citizen stewardship program to advance community health and well-being.
To date, PHS has trained more than 6,000 people in the Philadelphia region and beyond who have gone on to lead volunteers in planting over 3,000 trees each year in the southeastern PA region. Since the program was established in 1991, PHS Tree Tenders have planted over 25,000 trees. Mindy’s vision and deep passion have led to the PHS Tree Tenders program growing tremendously in size and scope over the last 30 years.
Today, the program is regarded as one of the most robust urban Tree Planting programs in the nation and is at the forefront of the urban forestry movement. Mindy is tirelessly working towards the goal that all communities will have access to trees and their myriad health and well-being benefits.
