Permanent Exhibition: Deeply Rooted, Ever Changing: 300 Years in Germantown

A permanent exhibition on display at the Historic Germantown Visitor Center, Deeply Rooted, Ever Changing: 300 Years in Germantown, traces more than three centuries of transformation, highlighting the evolution of Germantown from its founding through the abolitionist movement, the Industrial Revolution, and the Civil Rights Movement. Artifacts on display include decorative arts, advertisements, posters, household items, a rare 1730s rooster-shaped weather vane from the German Reformed Church in Market Square, and a surveyor’s compass designed by American astrologer and mathematician, David Rittenhouse. Drawing from the Germantown Historical Society’s collections, the exhibition provides a window into the everyday lives, achievements, and challenges of the communities that called Germantown home.

Rotating Exhibition: Rebellion and Remembrance in Freedom’s Backyard |July 9 – December 1 2026

Serving as the Visitor Center’s first rotating exhibition, Rebellion and Remembrance in Freedom’s Backyard examines Germantown’s unique role in the American Revolution and how the events of that era helped shape the neighborhood’s identity for generations. Just six miles from Independence Hall, Germantown stood at the crossroads of revolutionary change. Home to descendants of German and British colonists, enslaved and free Africans, and Native peoples, the neighborhood witnessed the violence of war firsthand while also serving as a place where individuals sought and asserted their freedom. Featuring Revolutionary-era artifacts and documents, the exhibition explores how memories of battle, resistance, and liberation helped establish Germantown’s lasting reputation as “Freedom’s Backyard.” Among the exhibition’s highlights is a section of the historic Johnson House fence damaged during the Battle of Germantown, accompanied by a video simulation illustrating how the damage occurred during the conflict. Also debuting on July 9, the exhibition will remain on view through December 1, 2027.

Allens Lane Art Center is pleased to present Attracted Opposites, a group exhibition featuring the art of husband-and-wife ceramic artists Jimmy Clark and Angela Klaerner Clark whose decades-long practices explore the rich possibilities of clay through very different, yet complementary, approaches.

Attracted Opposites offers an intimate look at two accomplished ceramic artists whose lives and creative practices have developed alongside one another, while maintaining distinctly individual voices.

Lancaster actor Jordon Ross Weinhold brings a one-person adaptation of Washington Irving's 1820 story of chilling events in the New York countryside. Who will win out? Join our horticulturist, friends, and neighbors on Tuesdays and Fridays in Wyck’s historic home farm for short lessons, hands-on experience, and a share of fresh produce when you volunteer! No registration required!

Looking Glass is an exhibition of works by six contemporary craft artists in conversation with the architecture, history, and interpretation of Cliveden. Sited within the historic interiors and grounds of Cliveden, the project reflects the history of people and place in 2026, in commemoration of our nation's semi-quincentennial. The program will feature curator Heather Moqtaderi and artists Naya Lee Chang and Janna Gregonis discussing their works and inspiration.

Stop at Cliveden between 12 pm and 4 pm on Saturday, November 7th to hear New Jersey based historical musicians, The Ministers of Apollo, perform music of the Revolutionary era featuring the harpsichord in Cliveden's parlor. The program is free and open to visitors of all ages. This program is generously supported by The Haley Foundation.

This guided tour will showcase the diverse collection of trees within the grounds - from mature sycamores and oaks to unique specimens like American Chestnut, Viburnum, Linden, and Black Locust. Participants will learn about the cultural history, ecological roles, and stories behind these trees. The walk highlights how the landscape functions as a living archive or resilience, heritage and sustainability. Rain date may 23rd

Former Director of Archaeology at Drayton Hall(opens in new tab) Luke Pecararo talks with Cliveden Preservation Director Libbie Hawes to compare and contrast what archaeological field work reveals about the architecture and historic use of the flanker buildings at Drayton Hall and the kitchen and wash house dependencies at Cliveden. Up the Wingohocking Creek from Stenton, the Fishers built Wakefield in 1798 and later built Wakefield Mills textile manufactory. This walking tour will include the Wakefield ruin, Little Wakefield, a school building that still stands, the site of Waldheim, and Belfield owned and gardened by artist Charles Willson Peale.

The walking tour will begin and end at La Salle University Art Museum. The museum will be open from 12:00-4:00pm for participants to visit the museum before or after the walk to view collections related to the landscape we will cover. Restrooms will be available at the museum.

The walking portion of this tour will be 2 hours long and will cover a little over 2 miles with varied terrain and elevation. We will be moving at a moderate pace with a few short breaks, walking through La Salle’s campus and around parts of the campus perimeter, along Lindley and Belfield Avenues. Please wear proper footwear, dress for the weather, and bring water.

The PA Flax Project is back at the Wyck Historic House and Garden to show you how the flax crop becomes spinnable fiber!

Shortly after the city of Philadelphia’s founding in 1682, it became known for its textile manufacturing industry - particularly in the Germantown area. That being said, manufacturing was still mostly small scale at the time, accomplished primarily by growing an acre or two of fiber flax in any one location and hand-processing at home and/or in small stores. At the same time as this industry boom, the Wyck House was being built and developed. There is evidence that during the residential years of this house, the families within it took part in the Germantown culture of growing and processing fiber flax in order to make household goods such as hand towels, undergarments, and more.

The PA Flax Project has been hosting hand processing events at the historic Wyck house since 2022, and we will be back this fall to continue the centuries-long tradition of turning fiber flax from crop to spinnable fiber on their grounds.
